Details

GOODNESTONE KNOWLTON TR 25 SE 3/67 Forecourt garden and stable walls to Knowlton Court GV II Forecourt, garden and stable courtyard walls. C17 and rebuilt and extended c.1904 by Reginald Blomfield. The front court is approximately 50 metres by 50 metres, consisting of red brick wall about 7 feet high, with simple wrought iron gate and steps to south to garden area, and wrought gates to north to stable court. West wall about 2 feet high with plain iron rails, and central gates, the gate piers with stone ball finials, the pedestrian gates with smaller, bifurcated foliate overthrows, the central gates on wrought iron piers, with central panels of clasped straps, and elaborately bifurcated foliated overthrow. From the north west corner of the house a wall runs out to the stable courtyard, including 2 large gate piers with ball finials by the house and section of wall about 8 feet high, all C18, the rest of the wall about 6 feet high and extending for about 50 metres, until it sweeps to the west, about 8 feet high again, and terminates in a stable building, now garage, 1 storey and attic with kneelered gables and loft door in right return, with C20 garage doors on ground floor, and 1 storey extension to left, also with kneelered gable.South and east of Knowlton Court, and reached by the flight of steps from the front court, are semi-formal gardens laid out by Blomfield, with balustraded terraces, flights of steps crowned with urn finials, and enclosing walls with gate piers with scrolled shoulders and ball finials.
