Public house.Probably late C15/early C16,remodelled and extended in the C17,internal alterations of the C20.Framed construction,plastered to the ground floor,the first floor tile-hung;peg-tile roof;brick stacks.Plan and Development:Overall T plan.The main block faces east with a rear wing at right angles.The internal plan has been very altered in the C20 including the removal of internal partitions.The north end of the main block is the earlier part of the building and was probably a late medieval open hall with a smoke bay added at the right(north)end,eventually replaced by a stack,which also serves the north end outshut.The south end of the main block is probably a C17 remodelling or rebuilding with an C18 or C19 end stack.The heated rear wing also appears to be C17.Exterior:Two storeys.Asymmetrical three-window front with outshuts at either end.Two C20 timber front doors to the main block,doors to the outshuts planked by one-light C20 windows.Two-,three-and four-light C19 cast iron casements with sexagonal panes.Roof gabled at ends.The right end stack has a handmade brick triple shaft with a corbelled cornice.Interior:The ground floor of the main block is now one room.The south end has a chamfered stopped crossbeam,exposed joists and a probably C17 plank door in the rear(west)wall with strap hinges.The ceiling carpentry to the north of this room is different in character with a step-stopped longitudinal beam and exposed joists.Joists of massive scantling flank the north end stack on the east side.Roof:Crown post and tie-beam roof construction over the north end of the main block,the crown post plain and braced once to the collar purlin and once to the tie-beam.Evidence of a smoke bay into which the north end stack has been inserted.The roof over the south end is of the clasped purlin type.Roof construction of the rear wing inaccessible on survey(1988)but jowled wall posts are visible.A complex evolved building which would repay more detailed investigation.Group value with the barn to the south.
