HADLOW ASHES LANE, PITTS WOOD TQ 64 NW 6/9 Barn approx 30m north of - The Poult House

GV II

Threshing barn. C18 or early C19 although some timbers are probably c17. Weatherboarded timber-framing with peg-tile roof.

Plan: The barn faces north west and has nearly full height opposing double doors onto central threshing floor. Integral outshots both ends and across the rear.

Exterior: Doorways and windows are c20 replacements. Double doors are plain plank doors. on the front C20 casements with glazing bars and garage doors to the lean-to outshots. The barn itself is gable-ended but the roof is hipped north end and carried down each side and to rear over the outshots.

Interior: Barn is 5 bays. Mortises in the middle rails and wall plates show that the non-structural framing with slender straight tension braces is secondary. Mortises in the wall posts suggest that there were once arch braces to the wall plates. The full height wall posts have jowled heads and carry arch-braced tie-beams. Collared trusses above with clasped side purlins and queen struts.

This is a well-preserved example of an unconverted Kent barn.
