4/60 Stirk House Hotel (Formerly listed as 16-11-1954 Stirk House)

Hotel, formerly house, early C17th. Sandstone rubble with roofs of slate and stone slate. 2 storeys with attics. The south facade comprises 2 adjacent gables with a gabled porch of 2½ storeys in front of their junction. Set back to the left is a taller narrow gabled tower, possibly containing a stair. Continuous drip courses on ground and 1st floors, the 1st floor of the porch oversailing on a cyma-moulded string. Windows mullioned with outer chamfer and inner hollow chamfer. To the left of the porch are windows of 2 and 6 lights, with windows of 2 and 5 lights on the 1st floor. The attic has a blocked 2-light window. To the right of the porch is one of 6 lights, with one of 5 lights on the 1st floor and a blocked 2-light attic window. The tower at the left has its ground floor covered by modern buildings, a blank 1st floor, and a blocked 2-light attic window. The porch has a 3-light 1st floor window and a blocked attic light. The outer doorway is moulded with an elliptical arch. The inner doorway, also moulded, has a Tudor arch. All the gables have copings, kneelers, and apex finials. The east wall has some double-chamfered mullioned windows. Adjoining to the east is a wing probably of later C19th date in a similar style, having 3 bays facing south with mullioned windows, 2 having gables. At the rear are modern extensions. Interior said to have been gutted by fire in the C20th, but western room has a wide chamfered fireplace with segmental arched head. Re-set within it is a cyma-moulded fireplace with Tudor-arched head.
