Details
SD 78 44 DOWNHAM DOWNHAM VILLAGE 13/21 Downham Church of England School 13.2.1967 GV II
School, 1839. Squared limestone with sandstone dressings and slate roof. One storey . On each side of the porch is a 5-light mullioned window with inner hollow chamfer, outer chamfer, and hood. The porch has a similar 2-light window and a moulded open pediment with mutules. Within the pediment is a plaque inscribed 'AD 1839'. The door, in the left-hand return wall of the porch, has a chamfered stone surround. Mutules at eaves. End stacks. Both gables are treated as moulded open pediments with mutules. Adjoining to the south is a lower wing with similar details. Its front wall has a chamfered stone door surround, and a window to the right with plain stone surround which appears to be a recent insertion. The southern gable has a 2-light mullioned window.
