ANDERTON (off) BOLTON ROAD SD 61 SW 14/1 Norris Fold Farmhouse - and Cottage, with garden wall - II

Farmhouse and cottage, now all one dwelling. Dated 1710 on lintel of door, but with some internal evidence of earlier building, cottage added at rear later in C18; altered. Squared sandstone with quoins, slate roof. Two-bay end-baffle-entry plan with projecting stair turret at the junction of the bays; cottage built as receding rear wing to 1st bay. Two storeys and garret; high chamfered plinth; plain doorway at right hand end has large rectangular lintel with raised lettering in recessed panels S one I M; 1710 window on each floor to the left, then a very prominent large gabled stair turret with a vertical rectangular stairlight and an oeil-de-boeuf at attic level: left of stair turret 1st bay has a vertical rectangular window at ground floor, and a tall corner chimney. Left return wall has 2 windows on each floor and an oeil-de-boeuf to the attic; 2-bay 2-storey cottage continuing to rear has altered openings. Right gable wall has 2 round- headed windows with hollow spandrels at 1st floor, and a gable chimney. Rear has lean-to in angle. Interior: housepart in 2nd bay has inglenook with stone heck and bressummer with tongue-stopped ovolo moulding, 2 lateral beams similarly decorated; former parlour in 1st bay has similar beam, former pantry to rear of this has chamfered beam, and partition wall between these contains braced large framing with wattle and daub (now concealed); at 1st floor the front end of the tie-beam of a large roof truss is joined to the jowelled head of a wall post (suggesting former timber-framed construction); former cottage to rear has chamfered beams. Garden wall to south and east of right half of house, of squared rubble with rounded coping, stepping down slope on east boundary, round topped gate posts; wall to south of garden has been moved c.2 metres north).
