BRINDLE HOLT LANE SD 52 SE 5/44 - Hough House Farmhouse

GV II

Farmhouse. C17 or earlier, altered probably in C18; now house. Cruck-framed and coursed squared sandstone with large quoins on base of very large dressed rectangular blocks, steeply-pitched slate roof with modern chimney on ridge. Three-bay plan with projecting porch/kitchen at junction of 2nd and 3rd bays on east side, former porch at junction of 1st and 2nd bays on west side. One and a half storeys; gabled porch on east side has door in right side wall, 3-light chamfered flush mullion window in gable wall; to left, a similar 3-light window and a square casement; to right, a small blocked window (like a firewindow). Left gable has an extruded brick chimney, 2 square windows at ground floor and one above; right gable has one large inserted window on each floor. Rear (west side) has recessed chamfered mullion windows of 3 and 4 lights, a gabled dormer above the latter, with a 3-light window; small gabled porch protects inner doorway with moulded surround, now blocked. Interior: altered, but partition wall between 1st (south) and middle bays incorporates a full cruck truss.
