SD 83 NE BRIERCLIFFE WTTH HALIFAX ROAD (off) EXTWISTLE 1/7 Hill End House - - II
House. Later C18; altered. Dressed sandstone (rubble rear), stone slate roof. Double-depth 3-bay plan. Two storeys, symmetrical (except for window sizes), with chimneys at both original gables, stone coping with kneelers at left gable; central doorway with moulded architrave and cornice, glazed and panelled double doors, rectangular fanlight (and small modern canopy of corrugated sheet), a 12-pane sashed window above; two multiple-light flush-mullion windows on each floor, of 4 1ights to the left and 6 lights to the right, the outer lights all fixed, with glazing bars, and the middle pair of lights wider than the others, those at upper left and lower right containing 12-pane sashes but the others altered. Later C19 extension at north end, which may be remodelling. Rear: central 3-stage stairlight, the upper stages with small panes; at 1st floor a 15-pane sash at each end, and a 4-light flush mullion window to the 1st bay, the 3rd light containing a 12 pane sash; ground floor of 1st bay covered by large modern lean-to. Interior: central passage to rear staircase, 2 rooms each side, but details not inspected. History: home of the Smith family, woollen manufacturers. (Reference, Frost p.45).
