DALTON SD 40 NE 9/40 Church of St Michael - II
Church. 1875-7 by T.H. Wyatt. Coursed sandstone rubble with Welsh slate roof. Comprises a nave, south-west tower with saddleback roof, north and south transepts, and lower chancel with south vestry and apsidal east end. The west wall contains 2 lancet windows, and a cusped round window under the apex. Between the windows is a niche containing a statue of St Michael and two angels. The tower has angle buttresses and lancet bell openings which are paired on the east and west sides. Within the gables are recessed circles with central quatrefoils and pierced surrounds. On the west side a gabled porch projects slightly and has a moulded pointed doorway with angle shafts. The north and south walls of the nave each have 2 paired lancets. On the north side there is a single lancet towards the east. The transepts each have 2 lancets and a cusped vesica. The chancel roof is swept downwards over the vestry. The 5-sided apse has pointed windows. Interior: the nave roof has arch-braced trusses rising from corbelled wallposts, alternating with scissor-braced principals. At the crossing there are moulded pointed arches to the transepts and to the chancel, the inner orders springing from engaged shafts with foiliated caps. The chancel has a boarded barrel roof. The apse walls are covered by coloured tiles below window sill level and incorporate double sedilia under pointed heads and a trefoiled piscina. On the north and south sides of the chancel pointed arches contain the organ pipes and console. The font is of quatrefoil plan and has a stem of 4 round columns. The east windows contain late C19 glass.
