CHURCH STREET (South side)
Nos. 45 (The Lodge) and 47 (Clock House)
(Gatehouses to Old Hall)
(Formerly listed as Nos. 45 and 53 (gatehouses to old hall))
II
Gate houses to Langham Old Hall, 1925, by H. Goodhart Rendel in arts and
crafts style. Coursed ironstone rubble with sandstone dressings and stone
tiled roof, 1½ storeys, a double butterfly plan, but picturesque assymetrical.
Road front has lower wing to left with full-height door and overlight, its
voussoirs touching the eaves. This is attached to the main block, which
has a long sweep of roof over a projecting wing to the left, and main entrance
arch to hall grounds to right. This entry has roughly cambered timber
lintel, and eleborately wrought struts on moulded corbels. Various full
dormers above. Right hand angled wing contains 2 double doors with timber
lintels and modernistic moulded corbels. Rear elevation has short angled
wing to left with stone arched doorway in gable end casement windows and
dormer in facade. Right hand wing projects at 2 angles and contains various
wood mullioned windows with cambered stone heads, and in the angle, a full
height canted bay window with wood mullions. Various uncoursed rubble
axial stacks, and dormer windows. Acorn finials over the main entry.
Above the angle of the right-hand wing rises a white painted cupola, bearing
clock and capped by a weather vane on ornate finial.
