Details

CASTLE DONINGTON HIGH STREET 51( 4426-4526 (west side) 10/84 No 72 and attached outbuildings 7.12.62 GV II

House. Circa 1730-40. Built for the Dalby family who still live in it. Red brick with ashlar dressings, hipped slate roof and brick chimneys. Double pile. 3 storeys, 3 x 2 bays. Chamfered stone plinth and quoins, moulded stone eaves, moulded stone cornices to chimneys. Front quoins are hollow-chamfered. Side elevations have brick band courses. 3-pane boxed sashes with gauged brick keystones. Front is slightly more elaborate, the ground and first floor windows having fluted keystones with small cornices. Eaves cornice projects very slightly over central bay, which has moulded stone architrave surrounds to windows, that to first floor with ears, pulvinated frieze and cornice. Central panelled door with tall glazed top panels and fine Gibbs surround, of stone, with moulded pediment. Door is approached by stone steps. Rear has later 3- storey porch projection to centre, with half-glazed door and arched windows. Single-storey range of outbuildings is attached to rear at north west corner. Interior retains original central staircase with turned balusters, pulvinated string, moulded handrail and fluted newel columns. Main ground floor rooms have early-mid C19 fittings, the right room with fluted shutters and doorcases, arched niches with shaped shelves, plaster ceiling frieze with urns, and plaster surround to mirror.
