4/46 Osgathorpe Hall Farmhouse 24.11.65 II
Farmhouse, late C17, showing renaissance influence. Uncoursed rubble on plinth. Main range with gabled cross wing. 2 storeys and attic. Principal front is south facing, but this is result of recent modifications; originally access was by opposed entrances to east of main range but is now in centre of south front; a doorway (moved from former position?) with bolection moulded architrave and triangular pediment over. Tall mullioned windows to main range with deep plain architrave and moulding. Above each floor, a moulded stone string course. Cross wing projects to west, with angle quoins, and stone coping and kneelers to gable. 3-light mullioned and _ _ transomed windows, and in the gable a smaller mullion with plain hood mould and decorative blank oval over. Side elevation to west has 2 massive projecting stacks with angle quoins, and various 2-light mullioned windows with continuous hood moulds, lighting staircase within. To east, a low projecting gable with 2-light mullions is a modern pastiche on an earlier core. Interior has open-well closed-string staircase. A decorative detail illustrated on photographs taken before alterations, links this house with the school and almshouses in the village, and it is reputed to have been built for their founder, Thomas Harley.
