Details

KIRBY MUXLOE MAIN STREET SK 50 SW 4/40 No 44 (The Old White House) 4.1.74 II House. Probably C16-early C17 in origin with later alterations. Lower storey is of granite rubble; upper storey is rendered and whitewashed with concealed timber-framing in left bays; left gable rebuilt in brick and whitewashed; Swith- land slate roof, brick chimneys to right and rear. 2 storeys, 3 bays, the left bay with former stair projection to rear, the centre bay with cross passage to right, the right bay formerly single storey. C20 barred wooden casements. 3-light to ground floor outer bays, 2-light to first floor of left bays, and 5-light in C20 gabled first floor extension to right. Cross passage has C20 door in early C17-style moulded wooden frame with 4-centred head, possibly a reproduction of the original. Interior: deeply chamfered and stopped spine beams with stop-chamfered joists in left bays; post in passage partition with ovolo moulded jamb of former doorway; larder partition in centre bay with wavy splat balusters; first floor stone fireplace with moulded 4-centred arch; heavy stud partitions between first floor rooms; one roof truss with high collar and heavy raking struts. House said to have been an inn with public right of way through cross passage.
