BEBINGTON MARK RAKE SJ 38 SW (north side) Bromborough 6/158 Wall to grounds of Stanhope House
G.V. II
Wall, approximately 47 m. long, with return to Spital Road. Date uncertain, probably medieval. Stone, with roll moulding to coping. Recessed quadrant to corner and stone arch to gate to Spital Road, altered c.1939. To east end of wall are 2 groups of vertical grooves, said to be caused by the sharpening of arrow heads. The name Mark Rake, indicating archery butts in the street, tends to confirm this.
