Details
CORPORATION STREET 1. 5104 (west side) City Centre Nos 179 to 203 (odd) (Ruskin Buildings) SP 0787 SW 30/5 8.6.82 II GV 2. Late C19. Red brick and terracotta; slate roof. Five storeys plus attic. 13 bays, the outer ones slightly advanced and with little shaped gables, the inner 3 with polygonal shafts either side from third floor level and a large gable. Ground floor with central door up steps within a round-headed arch with masks in the spandrels and an open segmental pediment and mostly altered shop fronts. First and second floors with shallow bay windows, those of the first floor with arched lights, those of the second floor with decorative panels below and little balconies to the third floor windows above. Third floor with couplets of windows in moulded surrounds. Fourth floor with Serlian windows standing on a moulded sill band and between stumpy columns to the bracketted eaves cornice. In the attic, flat-headed dormer windows. The outer and 3 centre bays differ from this system. The centre 3 bays have a central shallow bow window rising from first to third floor where the outer windows have concave- sided gables. In the gable, slender colonettes and moulded strings enclosing shell-headed niches, 4 segmented-headed windows and 4 blind arched windows. The outer bays all of terracotta and with third floor windows with concave-sided gables.
