Details
HANDSWORTH WOOD ROAD 1. 5104 Handsworth B20 No 137 (The Anchorage) SP 09 SW 2/9 II* GV 2. 1899, by Joseph Crouch and Edmund Butler. In an Arts and Crafts style. Two and a half storeys. Carefully balanced asymmetrical facade: left hand side of brick with stone dressings and the right hand side partly also brick with stone dressings and partly with applied timber framing. Tiled roof with brick chimney stacks and a cupola placed asymmetrically between a brick gabled and a lower, half-timbered gabled bay which incorporates the perch. Windows with leaded lights, some of them with stained glass by Mary Newill, who also did the embroidery inset over the fireplace in the Music Room on the ground floor. Door furniture, light fittings, copper firehoods in the hall, sitting room and music room and other metal work by Benjamin Creswick or another member of the Bromsgrove Guild. The Hunt and Feast murals by Fred Davis and the whole of the minstrels gallery in the hall were burnt in a fire C1977.
