TL 6222 GREAT DUNMOW NORTH STREET (E side) 7/31 Brook House No. 60 20.2.67 GV II*
House early C16, C18 and early C19. Timber framed and plastered house of complex plan form. 2 storeys with gabled peg tile roof to N and S crosswings and central well type roof of peg tiles. Front has 2 projecting wings with recessed centre, which has, on first floor, an ordinary and tripartite double hung sashes with small square panes. On ground floor an off-centre late C18 open pedimented doorcase with thin pilasters, modillions and ogee architrave in tympanum. Original 6 panel door. Also 4 light leaded C20 casement. Coved plaster eaves and 3 C19 ridge line stacks. The gabled crosswings have imitation framing in gable triangles and double hung sashes with square panes in first floor. Ground floor have similar with moulded heads. The N flank has parapet, canted 2 storey bay window with double hung sashes with small panes and a single storey canted C19 bay window with leaded casement lights. To the rear is a 2 storey gabled peg tile roofed block, a long C16 kitchen block and old iron casements, one with a curious projecting semi-circular oriel. Interior reveals exposed framing. Half 'H' plan early C16 house with 3 bay crosswing to N, 5 bay crosswing to south with included smoke bay and remains of 'hall' between. Substantial parts of crownpost roofs survive over crosswings. Kitchen block at rear also has crownpost roof. Scarf joints are halved and bridled.
