BRETTENHAM RUSHFORD TL 98 SW 8/3 Church of St John The Evangelist 16.7.58 GV I
Collegiate, now parish church. 1342 and C16. Flint with ashlar quotas and dressings. Thatched roof. Transepts and chancel removed in 1542. Tall west tower with diagonal buttresses with 3 set-offs. Full height stair turret to south. Punched encircled quatrefoils to first stage, west face with 2 deeply recessed trefoiled lancets. String course to belfry. 2-light Y traceried belfry windows with foiled mouchettes. Plain parapet. Roof line to east indicates reconstruction in 1575 by Robert Buston. Many putlock holes survive on tower and throughout church fabric. North nave wall has 4 bell based butrresses containing tall windows with continuous mouldings above string course. Window heads removed in C16 and paired brick lancets inserted. North door in second bay with undercut continuous mouldings Remains of piers and moulded capitals to north transept survive. C20 apsed chancel with 3 timber framed lancets. Remains of chancel foundations extend to east, but chancel arch piers and moulded capitals of mid C14 section still in situ. South aisle as north. C19 vestry in position of original south transept. Original 2 storey porch rebuilt as single structure with flushwork and inscribed panels. Lower half of brick staircase to upper chamber is of 1342. Interior largely remodelled in C19. Large wall arches of C14 remain as do transept and chancel arch piers. Wall dado panelled.
