GV II

One building containing 2 shops, formerly a house and shop. C17 with much late C20 alteration. Timber-framed; C20 render in panels with wave-patterned panels. Plaintiled roofs with a coved stucco eaves cornice. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics. 5 window range: 9-pane C20 sashes arranged 2:1:2 with the centre breaking forward slightly on the 1st storey. 2 C20 shop fronts to the ground storey. 3 hipped dormers with plain C20 2-light casement windows. A double gable at the rear of No.43A and a long rear wing; a parallel wing to No.43B has 2 flat-headed dormers on its northern slope with 2-light casement windows. A small plaster panel on the upper front has an obscure and not entirely legible Latin inscription relating to the Bury fire. This seems not to be of an early date and is probably connected with the Bullen family, who owned the premises for several generations from the late C18 and were keen local antiquarians. INTERIOR: No.43B has timbering exposed on the 1st storey: chamfered main beams and trimmers to the front range and all timbers exposed in the rear range, which has smaller main beams than the front, trimmers not in line and joists on edge. Some re-used timbers and no evidence for original partitions. Attics now inaccessible. The interior of No.43A is said to have no structure visible. (Information from Mrs M Statham).
