Details
TRING RURAL NEW ROAD SP 9013 (East side) Wilstone 10/156 South Barns at - Wilstone Great Farm GV II 2 barns at right angles linked by a fragment of the old farmhouse. E barn later C16, W barn and link C17. Rest of house demolished early C20. Timber frames on brick sills, dark weatherboarded with steep old red tile roofs. An L-shaped group of buildings on N of farm entrance. Tall, wide 5-bays E barn faces E with double doors in central bay and high pitching doors in flanking bays. Heavy swept jowls to bay-posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, mid-height rail jointed in-line, 2 posts in gable ends, deep curved braces to cambered tie-beams. Clasped-purlin roof with 2 purlins in each slope. Long lower collar with queen-struts only under purlins, supports longer queen-struts to upper collar. 3 trusses altered so that very tall queen-struts rise from tie-beam to upper collar and lower spur collars remain to support lower purlins. One truss remains as original. Deep curved wind-braces to both purlins. Flat laid rafters. No wattle holes on soffit of wallplate unlike N barn (q.v.). Simple bare-faced, tenoned scarf joint in purlins and wallplate. Adjoining at SW is one bay of the former 2-storeys weatherboarded farmhouse with 1st floor window on N side. Adjoining on W is a 4-bays barn facing N with double doors in 2nd bay from W. Bay posts with pronounced jowls, straight braces to tie-beams and clasped-purlin roof with 2 purlins in each slope. The upper purlin is supported by a high collar with long queen-struts below and spur - collars support lower purlins. Curved wind-braces to lower purlin only. Mid-height rail tenoned in-line with curved tension braces above. Squint-butted scarf joints with 3 edge pegs in purlins and wallplates.
