Farmhouse, and granary now an outhouse. C15/C16 hall house altered c1600 to 2-storeys throughout. C19 lean-to at W end. C17/C18 granary. Timber frame of house plastered, front lined as ashlar, all on a red brick sill. Very steep old red tile roofs. Painted brick single-storey lean-to at W, with tiled roof, and similar lean-to porch on front. 4-unit central chimney, baffle entry plan house facing N with E bay roofed as a crosswing. W end half-hipped. 2 W bays have the cambered tie-beams and heavy curved braces of the older house, but W end wall apparently rebuilt c1600. Wall paintings survive above collar level on the E side of the middle trussed partition, and smoke blackened rafters are re-used in the roof. 4-window front facing N with 3- light C19 casement windows and plank door under lean-to porch. Very large central red brick chimney of conjoined square shafts with corbelled tops. C19 external side chimney to E and of crosswing. Early C17 2-light ovolo moulded casement window cut into framing of upper floor at this end. Interior has chamfered and hollow stopped axial floor beams. More elaborate bar-stop in room to W of door. W bay now axially divided to provide pantry and dairy. Exposed squared joists. Old plank doors with iron hinges and latches. Clasped purlin roofs with exposed wind braces in bay E of central chimney. Heavy jowled posts and rebates for shutters to windows. Large open fireplace exposed in ground floor room E of door and in chamber over room W of door a narrower fireplace with chamfered lintol, chamfered brick jambs and C18 cast iron basket grate with raised figures with garland borders. Wall painting said to be of outlined flowers in maroon and dark green on a cream ground. 2-bay, timberframed and weatherboarded granary. Red tiled roof and old plank door with strap hinges and cat hole on E end. Now on outhouse with floor removed. Swangles preserves the name of a family appearing in the area in the C!4 (VCH (1912) 377: RCHM Typescript).
