House. 1752 ('MP 1752' on rainwater heads) low extensions to W
with battlemented circular slender stair tower in early C19 (on
1840 Tithe Map). Red brick with mellow yellow brick for
dressings and whole front facade. Stone dressings painted white.
Roofs of old red tiles. A large square tall house of 3-storeys
and basement facing S. Set back behind railings and small
garden. Symmetrical double-fronted double-pile plan with stair
central at rear. Projecting end chimneys to each range. Roof
concealed by parapet all round. 3 parallel hipped roofs from
front to back with mid-wall carried up to ridge level. Dated
rainwater heads in the middle of each sidewall. Symmetrical 5-
windows on W of door recently restored after removal of C19 bay
window) with narrow stone band at sill level to ground floor and
a deeper band to the 1st floor. Mutular cornice above 2nd floor
windows and brick parapet with stone coping. Recessed sash
windows, upper floors renewed in early C19 with plate glass.
Ground floor with 6/6 panes (renewed). Basement windows blocked
with recess. Red gauged brick flat arches to front windows.
Round headed recessed doorway up 7 moulded stone steps with
outcurving wrought iron handrail and knob standards. 4-panel
half-glazed door with roccoco fanlight. Deep moulded imposts
carried round to support arched architrave with head keystone.
Ionic 3/4 columns flank the doorway and support a full
entablature with modillion triangular pedimented swelled frieze
with carved laurels, and fret decoration to the soffit. The
finest house in the High Street. Crenellated top to C19 tower on
W rising between single-storey red brick extensions with pitched
slate roof. Interior has enriched cornices, panelling, moulded
dados, trefoil Gothic arch to stairhall, cut string C18 stair
with turned and carved balusters, moulded rail and wreath at
foot, twin Tuscan columns as upper newels and scrolled ends to
stairs. Contemporary fire surrounds in E rooms of ground and 1st
