Gazebo and grotto below in back garden of No 20

The grade shall be upgraded to grade II* (star) and the description shall be
amended to read:-
Gazebo with grotto below. Early C18. Gazebo of finely-jointed red brick in Flemish
bond with decorative vertical strips of paler, pink, brick; ashlar dressings; roof
not visible. Grotto of red brick lined with mortar set with iron slag and shells,
much of lining gone. Gazebo is square on plan, one storey, having: chamfered
plinth, rubbed-brick flat-arched opening to each side flanked by similarly-arched
narrow recessed panels, each with brick cornice, north and south sides each with
sash with glazing bars and exposed sash box, west and east sides with double
part-glazed doors and 4-pane overlights. Parapet with 3 panels to each face and
moulded stone cornice. Interior: fielded panelling to walls and reveals; cornice,
corner fireplace; panelled folding window shutters. The gazebo is built on a small
mound formed of earth covering brick cross-vaulted grotto which has round-arched
entrances on north and south sides. This was originally a feature in the grounds of
the Wanstead Grove estate.

Early C18. One storey, red brick gazebo. One old sash window (with thick glazing
bars), each face with narrow recessedpanels to each side, rubbed brick heads.
Parapet with 3 panels in each face. Moulded stone capped parapet. East and
west fronts have double glazed doors in place of sash windows. Fielded panelling
inside with corner fireplace. A good example of a Georgian gazebo, built on
a small mount.
