Canal lock. c1771 by James Brindley. Restored 1975. Part hand-made brick with machine-made brick repairs, including bullnosed blue brick quoins, sand- stone copings. 71 feet 6 inches long by 14 feet 6 inches wide. Double gates at both ends, the east end gates were replaced in 1975. The Droitwich Barge Canal is a broad gauge canal linking Droitwich with the River Severn. James Brindley acted as consultant engineer throughout its construction and it was completed in 1771. It was built to provide a reliable transport system for the salt industry and was worked by specially developed "wich" barges. It was undergoing restoration by the Droitwich Canals Trust at the time of survey (September 1984). The lock forms a group with Mildenham Bridge (qv) immediately to the west of it.
