Details

HIMBLETON CP SHELL SO 95 NE 7/176 Shell Mill Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. Probably late C16; remodelled late C19 with further mid-C20 alterations. Part timber-framed with brick infill, part brick, plain tiled roofs. Three framed bays aligned north/south with external sandstone ashlar chimney and pair of star-shaped stacks to its east elevation; L-shaped range adjoins west elevation. Two storeys, partly with a dentilled eaves cornice. Framing: west elevation and its north return have two rows of close- set vertical studding; north gable end has a collar and tie-beam truss with close-set vertical studs. East elevation: ground floor has a C20 large 3- light casement and a blocked window to left of chimney; three first-floor 3-light C19 casements; two ledged and battened doors with right side lights. Main entrance in lean-to addition to west elevation. Interior: south-east bay of older part has a large fireplace with massive stone lintel similar to those at Shell Manor (qv); also some C17 panelling with frieze; main beams are stop-chamfered. The older part originally had a south-west wing and an external chimney with two star-shaped stacks which was enclosed during the C19 remodelling. This south-west wing is said to retain part of a cruck truss which would imply the house has even older origins.
