1/84 Planned farmstead about 15 yards east of Bickley House
GV II
Planned farmstead. Dated 1863. Red brick with some blue brick dressings; plain tiled roofs. Square plan with complete range of interconnected build- ings enclosing four yards and divided by cnetral cruciform ranfe. Barn and dovecote on east side, stables to north, cowhouses to centre and pig sties to south side; large malthouse and two hop kilns at south-east corner. Yards enclosed to west side by walls with central gateways. All buildings have moulded eaves cornices and openings with cambered or round-headed arches and chamfered jambs. Barn: three bays; central wagon bay has midstrey to east side and opposed cart entries; chamfered ventilation slits with pointed heads. Dovecote: prominently situated at centre of east side; square plan with pyramidal roof with raised apex for ventilation; two levels; main east elevation has large double doors and, on upper level, a large recessed rectangular panel containing a four-bay arcade with blue brick round arches; the two archways to the left are louvred, the two to the right have been altered; each elevation of the roof has a small gabled dormer with six alight- ing holes. Stables, cowhouse and pig sties retain most of fittings, doors, floors and drainage system. Stables include grooms' quarters, stalls and mangers. Included in pig sty area is a boar pen with large round archway facing south and single-bay wing for animal feed preparation with smoke- blackened roof. Malthouse and hop kilns: large rectangular block; two storeys, attic with half-dormers and cellar; three-course band between main storeys. Openings have blue brick cambered heads; windows are mainly rectangular with multi-paned metal frames. Main south elevation: ground floor has two windows, two doors and a set of double doors; first floor has three windows, one of which is blind, and a door to right approached by external brick steps; three gabled half-dormers, one is blind, one has a loft door and one has a multi- paned window. Two hop kilns at east gable end have combined hipped slate roofs with square louvred lanterns; in south elevation is a pair of blind archways with blue brick round heads. Interior has large barrel vaulted cellar. The date "1863" is inscribed inside the main entrance archway. A complete and well-detailed example of a mid-C19 planned farmstead.
