House and barn, now one dwelling. c1630, altered and extended early and
mid-C20. Timber-framed, painted brick and rendered infill on sandstone
rubble plinth; painted brick additions and replacement walling; plain tiled
roofs. Originally an H-plan, the central bay aligned east/west with large
chimney, and three star-shaped stacks forming lobby entrance; cross-wings
of two framed bays at each end; the west wing has been linked to a three-
bay barn aligned north/south. Two storeys, attic and cellar. Framing:
three and four panels from sill to wall-plate, long straight braces in
lower corners, collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars, four struts
to lower and two to upper collar and some have V-strut in apex. Windows
are mainly C20 leaded casements. South front elevation: original part has
a central lean-to addition with 2-light casement and C20 oriel above; right
cross-wing gable end has a ground and first floor 3-light casement with plank
weatherings and an attic light; left cross-wing gable end has a first floor 3-
light casement, an attic light and the present main entrance; this has a lean-
to timber-framed C20 porch with central gable at the base of which is inscribed
the date "1630"; there is a re-used C17 studded door within. The C20 link to
the left has a ground floor hipped bay window and three first floor rectangular
lights; there is a large ridge stack above. The gable end of the former barn
has a ground and first floor 4-light casement with plank weatherings. Interior:
archway pierced through central chimney; small Jacobean overmantel in present
entrance hall. (VCH 3 (ii), p 442).
