Lodge to Shakenhurst. Early C17 with mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Timber-framed, painted brick and rendered infill, plain tiled roofs. Hall and cross-wing plan; hall of three framed bays aligned east/west; upper west bay has three star-shaped ridge stacks and a timber-framed outshut to its north elevation; cross-wing at west gable end is of two framed bays, the northernmost bay is lower in height and also narrower enabling the north outshut to overlap with part of the southernmost bay. Two storeys. Framing: hall part of three large panels from sill to wall-plate with long straight braces across lower corners; cross-wing has four panels from sill to wall-plate, short straight braces across upper corners and the north bay is jettied on shaped brackets; collar and tie-beam trusses throughout; hall and south cross-wing bay have three struts to collar and V-strut in apex; jettied north bay of cross-wing has two struts to collar. Plank weatherings on shaped brackets to hall gable end and cross-wing and wall-plates at gable ends all project slightly on similar brackets. North front elevation: hall has probable large blocked window to central bay and two brick raking buttresses to left bay; outshut has rectangular light at left side and from it projects a timber-framed porch adjacent to the jettied cross-wing bay; the porch has an ogee-headed archway with ball finial, a 2-light window in the left side elevation and within is a large doorway with moulded architrave and moulded and studded door. The cross-wing gable end has a bay window beneath the jetty with C20 casements and a 2-light first floor casement. Brick stack to left of ridge of south cross-wing bay. Interior not inspected. C20 lean- to additions at rear.
