BECKFORD CP MAIN STREET (off north side) SO 9635 - 9735 13/54 12/3 Court House 30-7-59 GV II

House. C17 with early and mid-C19 alterations and additions. Coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, also some timber-framing with rendered infill. Machine-tiled roofs with gable-end parapets to stone part and large brick stacks at each end and to rear of central ridge. Main range of four bays aligned north/south with intersecting service cross-wing of two framed bays at north end; the chimney at the north end is external, with offsets and a tall rebuilt ashlar stack. Two storeys and attic with chamfered plinth. Framing: cross-wing has two rows of square panels at first floor level, short straight braces across the upper corners and collar and tie-beam roof trusses, the east front truss having three struts to collar and a V-strut in the apex. East front elevation: main range has gabled above the first and third bays. Windows all have hoodmoulds (except for the window in the fourth bay) and are mainly C20 casements. The first bay has a 4-light chamfered mullioned window on the ground floor, and the third bay has a tripartite sash window with a central 12-pane sash and outer 8-pane sashes on the ground floor. Both bays have 3-light first floor chamfered mullioned windows and similar 2-light attic windows. There is also a similar 2-light window on the first floor of the second bay and there is a 3-light casement on the first floor of the fourth bay. Beneath this window is a blocked doorway. The main entrance in the second bay has a hoodmould, a C19 door with pointed-arched panels and a narrow transom light with five glazing bars. The service wing gable end has a 3-light window, on both main floors and a 3-light ground floor window and a 2-light first floor window in the angle with the main ridge. There is a C19 lean-to outshut enclosing the external chimney and also a single-storey C19 kitchen wing to the north side elevation.
