Details
KINNERSLEY CP - SO 34 NW 3/50 Kinnersley Castle 20.2.53 GV II* House. Late C16 to early C17 with C18, mid-C19 and later alterations. Sandstone rubble and brick with sandstone dressings. Stone slate hipped roofs and brick stacks. L-plan with arms towards east and south and extension to west. Cellar and three storeys with five-storey tower. North elevation has 1:1:1 4-light windows with mullions and transoms beneath three crow-stepped gables. Windows of top storey have one transom, the rest two transoms. The central and right-hand gables are linked above their eaves by brickwork. Dark brick diapered patterns to gables. Moulded sandstone strings between storeys. Large stone pilaster to left corner and sandstone quoins to right corner. Five attached diagonal brick chimney shafts. Entry via mid-C19 embattled porch with oak strapwork to glazed double-leaved early C19 doors with linenfold lower panels. Attached to right is brick extension, possibly C18 with dormers and quatrefoil opening near junction with main range. South elevation presents a series of receding planes from left to right. Mullioned windows, stepped gable to left and embattled tower to centre. Attached to left is brick addition with three stone quatrefoils to first floor, brick plat band and later porch on three segmental arches to left. West elevation has four brick diapered gables linked by brickwork. Interior has entrance hall with early C17 oak panelling having narrow semi- circular headed arches forming a frieze to top panels. Five-flight closed well newel staircase has turned C17 oak balusters. At the top of the well is a table supported by similar balusters. Several rooms with elaborate C17 plastered ceilings, oak panelling and chimney-pieces, one with oak motifs. Mid-C18 fireplace, pedimented doorways and panelling in north-west ground floor-room. Roof has massive collar trusses with three pegs to each major joint. (BoE, p 212; RCHM, Vol III, p 98-90.
