Details

DOWNTON CP DOWNTON ON THE ROCK SO 47 SW 3/22 Hotel Cottage 11.6.59 II Pair of cottages, now one dwelling. Cl7, altered mid-C19, restored late C20. Timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill on rubble base with rendered rubble wall at south end. Machine-tiled roof with brick ridge stack. Three framed bays aligned north/south with large rubble chimney between south and central bay forming a lobby-entry plan. Single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: three panels from sill to wall- plate, collar and tie-beam truss with struts and V-strut above collar at north gable end. East front elevation: windows are all C20 casements. There are three 2-light windows and a 3-light window on the ground floor, two gabled dormers with 3-light windows, and a C19 porch with a lean-to roof on chamfered arch-braced timber posts, a rendered base and a C20 door flanked by large multi-paned rectangular lights. Attic lights in gable ends. There is a single-bay gabled rubble addition to the rear of each bay. Interior is recorded as having some medieval carved stones built into the main chimney, including one with an heraldic passant lion. (RCHM, Herefs, Vol III, 1934, p 45; BoE, p l16-7) .
