Details
BODENHAM CP BODENHAM SO 55 SW 5/21 Devereux Court (formerly listed as 11.6.59 Moat House) II
House. Probably C15 with C17 and late C20 alterations. Timber-framed with rendered infill on sandstone base with concrete-tiled roof. Hall and cross-wing plan. Hall part of probably three framed bays aligned east/west with large external chimney at west end. Cross-wing adjoins east end and is probably of two framed bays and has a larger external rubble chimney with rebuilt brick stack on its east side. Part two storeys, part single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: much renewed in the C17 and very irregular but mainly of four panels from sill to wall- plate. South gable end of cross-wing has four rows of panels at first floor level. Collar add tie-beam trusses with struts. Truss to rear of cross-wing has two V-struts above the collar. South front elevation: windows are mainly C20 casements. Hall part has two large ground floor windows with transom lights and metal weatherings, two small 2-light windows at eaves level and two C20 gabled dormers with 2-light windows. To the right is a C20 timber- framed porch with a half-hipped roof, a C20 door with leaded side lights and a glazed door within. The cross-wing had two ground floor and one first floor window; all are 2-light casements with transom lights. Interior: hall part has an inserted C17 floor. The cross-wing is recorded to have some original moulded ceiling beams and, on the first floor,an original stone fireplace with a shouldered lintel, diagonal shafts at the sides and an embattled cornice. The building, and probably its predecessor on the same site was the manor house of Bodenham Deveruex and remained in the ownership of the Devereux family from the C12 until 1803 when it was sold.
