Details

BODENHAM CP off A 417 (west side) SO 55 SW 5/9 Englands Gate Inn GV II Public house. C17, with mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Timber-framed with rendered infill, partly roughcast and partly rendered on sandstone rubble base with some sandstone walling, machine-tiled and slate roofs and large rebuilt brick stack to rear of main ridge. T-plan; main range of probably two framed bays aligned east/west, external rubble chimney with rebuilt detached brick stack at east end and also large rubble chimney at west end adjoining cross-wing. Cross-wing at west end of two framed bays; it has a small external chimney at the south gable end and a wing of two framed bays adjoining to the north-west. Single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: mainly three rows of panels from sill to wall-plate; cross-wing has two rows of panels at first floor level exposed at rear. Hall part has a collar and tie-beam truss with two struts and a V-strut in the apex at the east end. There is a tie-beam truss with decorative latticed struts to the rear of the cross-wing. South front elevation: main range has a C20 canted bay window with multi-pane casements to the right and a central gabled dormer with a pair of 2-light casements. The bay window has a lean-to roof which continues above a C20 door to the left of it. Left of the doorway is a C20 single-storey wing with a 4-light casement in its gable end and in its east side. There is also a small gabled porch in its east side. At the east end of the main range a lean-to C20 porch adjoins the side of the external chimney. The cross-wing has a 3-light C19 case- ment, an attic light and a doorway in its gable end. A lean-to addition adjoins the west side to the front. There is continuous lean-to timber- framed outshut to the rear of the main range. Interior: altered but retains some stop-chamfered main ceiling beams and there is a large fireplace at the western end of the main range. (RCHM Herefs II, p 16, item 35).
