BROMYARD

815/1/182 CRUXWELL STREET 12-APR-73 BROMYARD 6 (Formerly listed as: CRUXWELL STREET BROMYARD 13)

GV II A C17, single-bay, two-storey dwelling. It has a timber frame with some brick infilling, the pitched roof is slate and there is a brick chimney stack.

EXTERIOR:The ground floor has a large, hornless, two-over-two sash window. The front door has fielded panels to the bottom half and a glazed top half. There is a moulded cornice and narrow plain fascia running across the façade. At first-floor level there is timber framing with inserted six-over-six hornless sash.

INTERIOR: Not inspected

HISTORY: Bromyard is a small market town that was first recorded in circa 840. No. 6 Cruxwell Street is situated on one of the principal thoroughfares in the town, which runs east from the vicarage and church. It was known as Corkeswalle Vicus in the late C13 and recorded as Croxewalle Streate in 1575. To the west, where it meets Old Road, it was and was known as Sheep Street in the early C20. This central area of the town to the west and south of the church and around the market place appears to have been fully built up by the early C17, though some of the plots have been re-developed since that time.

No. 6 Cruxwell Street dates from the C17. It is currently used for domestic accommodation but the large window on the ground floor suggests it once had a commercial function.

REASON FOR DESIGNATION: No. 6 Cruxwell Street is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Architectural: as a good example of a C17 house with a pleasant principal façade with exposed timber frame Intactness: a substantially intact C17 façade at first-floor level, with later refronting at ground-floor level * Historic interest: it is early in date and is illustrative of the vernacular tradition and development of this type of building in the town * Group value: the building forms part of a strong grouping of listed buildings in the centre of Bromyard
