The Old Forge

II

Former smithy and house, now house. Probably late C16, altered mid-C19
and mid-C20. Timber-framed with painted brick infill on rubble base, partly
roughcast and weatherboarded with machine-tiled roof and brick ridge stack.
Four framed bays aligned north/south. The two southernmost bays are larger
and have an external rubble chimney with a brick stack on the east side. There
is a chimney at the junction with the two narrower north bays. Two storeys.
Framing: four panels from sill to wall-plate. First floor is jettied to the
south-west on a moulded bressummer. The jetty at the south end has been under-
built but the gable is still also jettied. No trusses exposed. East front
elevation: on the ground floor there is a 3-light casement and two single-
light casements with plank weatherings. On the first floor are four 2-light
casements and a square light. Main entrance to right of centre has a gabled
canopy on metal brackets and a half-glazed C20 door with a ,moulded architrave.
At the right end is a. double doorway. (RCHM, III, p 53, item 6).
