Details

BRILLEY CP - SO 25 SE SO 24 NE 2/1 Crossway Farmhouse 5/1 and adjoining haybarn - II Farmhouse, now store, and adjoining haybarn. C17, extended probably mid-C18 with mid-C19 alterations. Part painted rubble, part timber-framed with painted brick and wattle-and-daub infill on rubble base, some weatherboarding and stone tiled roof laid in diminishing courses with rubble and blue brick ridge stack. Five bays aligned north-east/south-west; three original framed bays situated to north-east with large chimney at junction with rubble part. Single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: two panels from sill to wall- plate. No trusses visible externally. South-east front elevation: windows are mainly C19 casements. The two rubble bays to the left have a 2-light ground floor window, a gabled dormer with a 2-light C20 casement and two doors, one ledged and battened, the other partly glazed. The three framed bays have two 3-light windows and a multi-paned metal window, a gabled dormer with a 2- light window and the main entrance which has a ledged and battened door with a moulded architrave and also a double doorway. Interior: framed part has a roof with collar and tie-beam truss with struts, a large fireplace with a C19 range and a winder staircase to the rear of the fireplace. Haybarn adjoins north-east end. C17. Timber-framed and weatherboarded on rubble base with corrugated metal roof. Two framed bays. Ledged and battened door and shuttered opening in south-east elevation. Interior: wall-framing has two rows of panels from sill to wall-plate and large straight braces in the lower corners. Collar and tie-beam trusses with struts and intermediate arch-braced tie-beam truss with swept raking struts. Two tiers of trenched purlins. (RCHM, III, p 24, item 14).
