House, now house, shop and public house. 1826 by Woodhead and Hurst of
Doncaster for Aire and Calder Navigation; later C19 shop front with C20
alterations, late C19 addition to rear. Brick in Flemish bond, colour-
washed. Welsh slate roof. 3 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Plinth.
Entrance to left of centre has original stucco or ashlar doorcase with
pilasters carrying entablature with modillioned cornice and hood; C20 double
panelled door beneath plain overlight in reveal. To left later C19 shop
front with recessed half-glazed fielded-panel door to left beneath moulded
lintel and plain overlight in panelled reveal, 4-light window to right with
moulded mullions above apron with basket-arched panels. To right, former
similar shop front with C20 brick infill incorporating 3 windows. Shop
fronts to both sides in wood surround with single pilasters to left and
right carrying plain frieze with modillioned cornice. (boxed-in to left).
First-floor ashlar sill band. Later C19 4-pane first-floor sashes in
original openings beneath rubbed-brick cambered arches. Short 6-pane
second-floor sashes with sills beneath similar arches. Plain C20 wooden
eaves board. Stack straddling ridge with plain ashlar band, brick cornice.
Interior. Entrance hall has moulded ribbed cornices,round-arched opening
with archivolt and panelled pilasters with roundel ornament. Moulded
cornice to shop, ground floor left. Ground-floor rear left room has
elaborate late C19 plasterwork frieze with urns and foliage, ornate cornice
and panelled ceiling with openwork floral and grapevine motifs, ceiling
rose; adjoining billiard room to rear has octagonal panelled ceiling with
similar plasterwork designs, rising to octagonal lantern. Both rooms have
low C20 false ceilings; the original ceilings visible through glass panels.
Part of the original planned port settlement beside Goole Docks. Aire
Street was the main commercial street. Porteous J D, Canal Ports, 1976.
