14/70 Brick water tower 31.1.78
GV II Water tower. 1885. Red brick in English bond. Sheet metal dome. Cast- iron water tank. 3-stage cylindrical tower approximately 43 metres high and 10 metres in diameter. Bottom stage, containing west entrance, forms deep plinth with stepped chamfered cap. Round headed entrance has raised round- chamfered surround and 5 chamfered orders to sheet metal door. Tall second stage consists of fluted tower shaft with recessed panels stepped in to top and bottom, 5 tiers with 4 slit lights to each tier, corbelled brick cornice. Drum-shaped top stage has plain plinth, 4 slit lights, plain raised brick frieze, moulded ashlar cornice, rounded ashlar blocking course and dome. Superceded by nearby reinforced concrete water tower of 1927 (qv). No longer in use. Barbey M F, Civil Engineering Heritage: Northern England, 1981, pp 99, 100.
