GV II
Font. Probably mid C17. Limestone. Tub font with square lower section, octagonal upper section. East side bears 2 roughly inscribed C17 dates with final figures very worn: the lower one perhaps 1660. Reputedly from the Protestant church in the fortified settlement at Sandtoft founded in the mid C17 by the Dutch drainers. Local commoners vandalised the church in 1651 and 1656, after which it presumably returned to use, but by 1686 it was in ruins. Presumably retrieved by one of the Stovin family of Tetley Hall (qv), perhaps George Stovin the antiquary (1696-1780) who probably inscribed the dates. Included partly for historical associations. N Loughlin and K Miller, A Survey of Archaeological Sites in Humberside, 1978, p 152; V Cory, Hatfield and Axholme, an Historical Review, 1986, p 59.
