GV II
Smithy. C19 with earlier origins, for Duke of St Albans Estate. C20 renovations. Coursed limestone rubble with limestone ashlar dressings, brick plinth, timber portico with weather-boarded gable to left, Welsh slate roof. Classical style. Plan: single-room with portico to left, open to south front and gable-end. Single storey, entrance to south. Plinth, ashlar quoins. Wide entrance with ashlar surround beneath re-used timber lintel; cast-iron tyre-bender attached to wall on left. Section to left: 2 timber columns on padstones supporting timber wall-plate. End stack to right and axial stack with decorative caps. Right return: 3 timber columns on padstones supporting pedimented gable with a wooden pedestal above, bearing a carved anvil in relief, and carrying a carved wooden leaping horse approximately 1 metre high. Rear: blocked central opening with quoins, containing casement with glazing bars. Open section contains board door to smithy and C20 timber seat. Interior of smithy has brick and stone floor, and a pair of brick hearths with chimneys and stone troughs.
