17/48 Walled garden to Sledmere House
GV II
Walled garden. Probably late C18 with later additions and alterations. Pinkish-red brick in English garden wall bond with ashlar and moulded tile copings. Octagonal on plan with central dividing wall, wall to west extends approximately 20 metres and is curved on plan to west. Entrance to west side an elliptical arch with double board doors between pilaster strips with stepped ashlar caps and ball finials with ashlar copings to parapet. 3 further pedestrian entrances to south and north sides, 2 with board doors, all under cambered arches. Opening through central wall an elliptical arch with ashlar imposts, the whole stepped above the height of the wall and with ashlar copings and vases to piers. Walls approximately 3 metres high. Sections of outer walls break forward approximately every 3 metres and to front are stepped. Mainly moulded tile copings to outer walls, ashlar copings to inner wall. South-facing walls have heating ducts.
