SD 91 NW WARDLE RAMSDEN ROAD (west side)

4/155 Methodist Church 29.6.1966 (formerly listed as Wardle Methodist Church) G.V. II

Wesleyan Chapel now Methodist Chapel. 1874. Rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and slate roof. Classic chapel plan. Italian Renaissance style. 4 bays, 2 storeys with pedimented gable and portico. Stone plinth, banding and giant rusticated pilasters. The portico has three pairs of coupled Tuscan columns,an entablature and a parapet. The semi-circular headed windows to either side have bracketed sills, lugged architraves and entablatures. There are 3 linked windows above the portico and one on either side at first floor level, all have semi-circular heads, keystones and pilasters. The gable pediment has a central semi- circular opening with foliated surround. All windows have marginal glazing bars including the more plainly treated 6- bay side elevations. Interior: the former gallery which sweeps round each end is supported on Corinthian cast iron columns and formerly housed an organ on the fourth side, it has now been floored over to create a first floor hall.
