EAST SUTTON TQ 84 NW 5/58 Former Riding School and Prospect Tower at East Sutton Park GV II
Riding school and Prospect Tower, now gymnasium and out- buildings. Mid C19 by C.J. Richardson [J. Newman, Buildings of England Series, West Kent and the Weald,1980]. Red brick in Flemish bond on coursed stone plinth. Plain tile roofs. Riding school at right angles to yard to left, tower to right overlooking Weald. Link building between. Riding School: 2-storey entrance gateway with broad octagonal stair turret to left. Ground floor of both, and first floor of turret treated as battered plinth. Stair turret battlemented, gateway gabled with moulded kneelers and missing finial. Octagonal brick stack to right side. Ventilation slit to gable. Single light to first floor of stair turret. 2- light leaded casement to gatehouse under brick band. Tall 4-centred arched gateway with rubbed brick voussoirs. C20 double doors in rear wall. 4-centred arched doorway to iron spiral staircase in turret. Body of Riding School to rear, left side elevation with 5 alternating buttresses and slit windows. Interior: balcony with 2 rows of turned balusters to west (gateway) end. Link: banded red and grey brick. Single storey building, set back, front wall of which links rear walls of gatehouse and Prospect Tower. Lean-to canopy in front on paired Doric columns, raised to half hip over centre. Prospect Tower: has 2-storey building to left similar to gatehouse but without archway. 3-stage octagonal battlemented tower with taller battlemented stair turret. Broad slit window to each stage. 4-centred arched doorway to base to west. Interior not inspected.
