Details

HAWKHURST SLIP MILL ROAD TQ 73 SE (east side) 10/433 Slip Mill House 20.6.67 GV II Mill and mill house. C18. Timber framed and weather-boarded on painted brick ground floor. Plain tiled roofs. Two storey house with hipped roof with stacks to left and to right. Two tripartite glazing bar sashes (late C20) on first floor, and bays to left and to right on ground floor, with central boarded door in moulded pilastered surrounds. Hipped ranges to rear. Projecting at left the former mill building, of 2 storeys and attic, with 2 gabled dormers, 2 glazing bar sashes on first floor with half-doors to centre with rectangular fanlight and ground floor with segmentally-headed casements, with half doors to centre, with glazed inner opening. Gabled rear range. Remains of decahedral wheel, and wheel-pit only machinery remains (see Fuller and Spain, Watermitts, Kent and the Borders of Sussex). The mill was run from at least late C16 to C19 by the Ayerst family, also connected with Holmans and Primrose Hill nearby.
