Details
HAWKHURST HIGHGATE HILL TQ 7430-7530 (east side) 16/330 Tollgate (formerly listed as 11.8.88 The Toll House) GV II Tollgate. Mid C19. Sandstone with plain tiled roof. Simple rectangular plan, single storey and attic to roadside, 2 storeys to rear. Roadside with plinth and shaped kneelered parapet gable, with concave and convex curved outline and cross- shaped pinnacle. Central stack with star-plan moulded stack. Single narrow attic light and mullioned stone canted bay on ground floor. Boarded door in right return in porch with smaller shaped gable, with loop-cross in end wall, and shouldered door opening to roadside. Boarded door to rear right on ground floor, and stone mullioned windows to return and rear elevations. The house stands on a high embankment, part of the engineering works of the associated turnpike road (now the 4229).
