Nos. 1 to 5 inclusive, with railed areas

Terrace row. 1780's. Stock brick. Three storeys and basement with 4
storey centre right block, with parapets and stacks, ranged left to right.
No. 1 is of 4 window bays, the other houses of 3 each (13 bays in all),
all glazing bar sashes (of larger size on 1st floor of No. 4), all with
gauged heads, in red brick on No. 5. No. 1 with 4 glazing bar sashes on
ground floor, otherwise 2 to each house, with doors of 6 panels to left
(in 2 storey lean-to at end left with sash over). Nos. 1 and 2 with
identical moulded doorcases, with panelled reveals and semi-circular
fanlights, and dentil cornice. Similar doorcases to Nos. 3 and 5, without
the dentil cornice (No. 5 with half-glazed door) both with traceried
fanlights. Doorcase to No. 4 with attached Tuscan columns, frieze and
cornice, and iron lamp bracket over. Flights of moulded steps. Glazing
bar sashes to basement. Spear headed rails with dograil to No. 1, spear
head rails elsewhere. Simple rails to steps. Built by James Townley
(originally with stable block closing off street as cul-de-sac), the
developer of late C18 Ramsgate, who lived at No. 1 until Townley House
(item 8/93 ) was built in 1792. (See Busson, Ramsgate, 68).
