CLARENDON ROAD 1. 5280 II 0/1147 No 21 (Lynch House) 2. House. 1899 by Niven and Wigglesworth, in a free late C17 and C18 style. Red brick in Flemish bond, with rubbed brick dressings. First floor and gable of left gable end tile-hung. Plain tile roof. 2 storeys and garret. Rear wing 2 storeys and basement. Moulded rubbed brick string course at impost level of ground-floor windows. Asymmetrically shaped end gables with moulded brick coping, and a further shaped gable to left of centre of front elevation. Brick gable end stacks with moulded cornices. Irregular fenestration of 4 sashes; one to left and two to right of gable, each comprising three 6-pane sashes separated by mullions, and one taller 12-pane sash in open box and with blind semi-circular panel above it under the gable. All first-floor windows have moulded brick architraves, chamfered brick cills and shaped rubbed brick aprons. Sash under gable also has a long tapered and corniced keystone above the blind panel, and is flanked by grey brick diaper work. Deep Diocletion-style windows to ground floor, with similar keystones and chamfered brick cills. Half-glazed and panelled double doors under front gable, with moulded rubbed brick architrave and leaded canopy on scrolled brackets. Broad rear return wing to left with a pair of shaped brick gables to rear, two 3-light first-floor windows and 2 Diocletian ground-floor windows with keystones and iron balconettes. Canted bay window. to ground floor of left side, with panelled base, blind boxes, dentilled wooden cornice and ogee leaded roof. Interior: bevelled glass to hall screens. Moulded (18-style cornices to two ground-floor rooms (one with modillions),landing and four first-floor rooms. Five C18 style fireplaces. Panelled doors. Staircase with corkscrew balusters, moulded handrail and scrolled top newel with ball finials.
