16/5 Stables, house and garden wall immediately to north- east of Whelprigg (q.v.)

Stables and house, and wall enclosing garden approx. 70 x 40m. Datestone: 1845. Dressed stone with some ashlar dressings and slate roof. U-plan building with garden to west. East range forms house. 7 bays; and bay breaks forward under coped gable with ball finial; 1st and 6th bays are gabled. Windows are sashed with glazing bars and horns. C20 gabled timber porch to 3rd bay. Large entrance to 1st bay and 2 entrances to 5th bay. 2 cross-axial stacks and cross- axial stack to wing. South gable end has tall window with transom, label mould and small-paned glazing. West elevation has sashed windows and 3 entrances to left-hand end. North range is part of stables and has large opening, now blocked, with label mould. West range, part of stables has to east large opening with timber infill and large doors; stable entrance with overlight, flanking windows with small-paned glazing, and pitching hole under gablet, all with label moulds; and elliptical-headed entrance. 2 cross-axial stacks. South gable-end has ball finial. Walls and large: gate piers between south gable ends flank large entrance with iron overthrow for lantern. West elevation is blind, but for 2 inserted windows. 3 gabled elements break forward, with ball finials to outer gables, spike finial, probably weather vane, to central gable. Garden wall has flat ashlar coping. Canted south-west angle has lower wall, ramped up to ends. West entrance has triangular head in splayed reveals with label mould and wrought-iron gate; wall ramped up over.
