Details
LOWER HOLKER B5278 SD 3676 (West side) Cark-in-Cartmel 9/117 Mill House II House. c1782. Roughcast stone with slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 bays with 3-bay single-storey wing to right. Windows are sashed with glazing bars, but that to 1st bay of ground floor has casement in reduced opening. Central entrance has Tuscan columns with fluted capitals, frieze with rosettes and pulvinated panel, and pediment. Wing to right has 2 windows with C19 small-paned fixed glazing, one with opening light with cornice, and one window with small-paned fixed glazing. Gable-end stacks and cross-axial stack. Rear of 3 storeys due to slope of ground, varied fenestration and 2 entrances. The house was built for the owner of Cark Cotton Mill, built c1782, and is the only surviving building of the mill complex.
