Details

PARISH OF ECKINGTON BIRLEY HAY SK 38 SE 1/59 Warehouse 60 metres north of Birley Hay Farmhouse II Outbuilding, formerly warehouse and workshops associated with the water-powered scythe and sickle works which formerly occupied the adjacent site. Late C18. Coursed squared coal measures sandstone with ashlar dressings, intermediate and end ridge brick stacks and a Welsh slated roof. Two storeys, three bays, formerly with three doorways with massive stone surrounds and lintels, now with one altered to form a double doorway. Two square first floor openings in flush surrounds, one a 2-light mullioned window, and a smaller rectangular light. A second pair of double doors to the centre of the elevation. The rear elevation has a 2 and 3-light flush mullioned window, with some blocked lights. South gable with a large first floor loading door and planked double doors. The building formed part of a complex of workshops and dwellings, similar to the Abbeydale Works site in Sheffield. The mill pond, and part of the water powered forge, survive to the west of the warehouse, but are not included in this or any other list.
